Top 10 Website Copy Basics

  1. Use bullets and numbered lists to highlight lists rather than lengthy paragraphs full of commas.
  2. Use titles and subtitles to break up content and make your copy more scan-able.
  3. Keep paragraphs short.
  4. Make sure calls to action are clear and simple. Too many calls to action can be as confusing as none.
  5. Use links to point to additional info on other pages of your site rather than trying to fit everything onto one page.
  6. Link to additional resources when it is valuable for your visitors, but make sure links open in a new browser window.
  7. Use keywords in your copy, but make sure it is readable, and doesn’t sound like a broken record repeating the same words over and over.
  8. Write keyword-rich – not keyword stuffed – title and description tags that summarize what your page is about.
  9. Use alt attributes to describe images for search engines and visitors using screen readers.
  10. Proof-read every page on your website to eliminate grammar and spelling errors.
