Are you hiding your Website?

Ok, you are doing what you know how to do with SEO (search engine optimization) on your company website but is it enough?  With Google and the other search engines being the multi-faceted mazes that they are, it is sometimes easy to be hidden without even knowing it.  What makes this maze even harder is that your customers now have multi- ways of searching these same search engines.  If you haven’t looked at the Google search page closely lately you need to do it now.   What you will see is WEB, IMAGES, VIDEOS, MAPS, NEWS, SHOPPING, and then there is a MORE button!

You see your customers can now pick how they want to find you, and some of these users are really starting to use these other narrow search features.

I will give you an example from my own world.  When I want to find the name of an artist who sings a song I heard on the radio, I would type in some of the lyrics or title and run a “normal” web search to get my results.  Now on the other hand my wife is a more focused searcher.  She will click the videos tab (or search right in youtube), and search for the same term and end up watching a youtube video that tells her what she was looking for.  While our end result should be the same, it won’t be if that artist does not have a video online.  Many of these results are also mixed in the “regular search” as well, and term that is being used lately is “universal search”.  You just want to be sure you are listed as many times and places as you can, so you customers can find you easily.

My point is that unless you are optimizing your site for all of these search methods, you may be playing “hide and seek “with your future clients.  I would bet that the majority of them would prefer that you jump out right in front of them, rather than take any extra time searching for you themselves.

So next time you are looking your site over or talking with your professional SEO team, be sure to include these new search methods into your action plan.  This may be adding photos to your site, making a short video about your company or individual products, checking your company on google maps to be sure it is labeled correctly, adding/submitting news releases to your site or various submission services, adding your company to the google merchant center if applicable (if you sell things online), and yes youtube is a recommended place to keep your videos.  You may already have these things in place, but updating and optimizing them will keep you closer to your clients than ever before.
