Tumblr: Excellent for B2B Social Marketing

Filed under: General — Brynn Andre

When working on social marketing for industrial clients and B2B clients, I keep in mind that accounts that need excessive attention (think Twitter) are not feasible for some websites. However, as websites and blogs become increasingly user friendly, allowing forĀ  business owners to log in to the back end and update content themselves, creating fresh new blogs, articles and press releases is much easier. Anything new is worth heralding into the online sphere. Not only is it a good way to generate real-time interest, but it also provides links back to your site and adds content that can be found for years to come, and direct traffic to your site.

The most recent social marketing tool I’ve been exploring is Tumblr. Tumblr is a slick mash up of a blog, RSS feed, Twitter and social bookmarking. The service is hard to explain or label, but it is extremely attractive and useful for business accounts. Tumblr has the ability to aggregate data from Digg, Delicious, Twitter, Blogger and other feeds. Aggregate is my favorite word in social marketing because it means less manual work is required. Furthermore, you can use Tumblr as a blog too. Add articles, images and anything else you please, as often as you want. A good idea if your business already has a blog is to use Tumblr as more of a playground to post more casual topics and fun information. You can test the waters of using a more personal voice, and see if traffic increases.
Right now, when a post is added to your blog, you might Tweet about it, bookmark it in Digg, bookmark it in Delicious, and include it into Facebook status. With Tumblr, all of those actions will be pulled into your nice, clean tumblr interface. Users can come to your Tumblr blog and easily see all of the activity you’ve done in the last few weeks.

Tumblr blogs can have SEO power too. If you install the Tumblr XML sitemap plugin and pay attention to your Post titles and keyword usage, the search engines will begin directing traffic to your Tumblr account. An example of a clean and functional Tumblr account for business is Iowa EyeCare, an optometric practice in Marion, Iowa. As you can see there is a variety of content being pulled into the blog.

As I work more with Tumblr I will keep you posted on the progress and tips and tricks for business use.
