Finally, Semantics! Google Makes Improvements to its Search Results
After six long years, it looks like Google may finally be putting to good use an acquisition they made of the company Applied Semantics. Last week Google announced that it’s made improvements to its search technology, incorporating semantics into their search algorithm. From Google -
Starting today, we’re deploying a new technology that can better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page).
For example, if you search for [principles of physics], our algorithms understand that “angular momentum,” “special relativity,” “big bang” and “quantum mechanic” are related terms that could help you find what you need.
It’s much too early to tell how this change will actually effect the search results and how he we optimize for keywords. But it is defiantly something we will want to keep an eye on. The following is purely my own speculation. First, I’m very excited to here about this because I think eventually this will make a big impact on the quality of the search results. I’m guessing they will roll these changes out and tweak as they go along, so we won’t notice in any major changes right away. For now, I wouldn’t make any drastic changes to your site. You may want to experiment with adding some words to your copy that are related to your most important keywords in addition to normal saturation.
