New year, new site? Maybe not.

It’s a new year, and your business might be exploring new ways to market. You might even be thinking of building a shiny new site to replace your old site. Your old site might have an outdated look and feel, and it might seem like the best idea to start from scratch. While, for many companies a brand new site is necessary, for many companies, simply revamping the current site is a much better idea. From an SEO standpoint, there are many reasons to keep your existing site. Here’s just a few:

  • The age of your website is a positive factor. Search engines like older websites, so keeping your existing site will help your search engine rankings. Another factor related to age is the life of your links.
  • Over time your site acquires links from other sites. The climbing age of those links is beneficial, as the search engines seem to be impressed by links with a long lifespan.
  • An obvious reason to keep your existing site, and opt for a rejuvenation, is the cost. Creating a new website can cost a company thousands of dollars, if not more. On the other hand, a site revamp could be more cost-effective.

So this is a rare case when starting fresh is not the best idea. For SEO, consider working with your already existing site. You might realize there are many good aspects to the site, which can still be used to promote your business.
