How to find Non-Competitive Keywords in the Industrial Marketplace

Part of the art of choosing the best keywords for your site is finding keywords that aren’t too competitive. This higher the competition for a keyword, the harder it is to get top ranking. There are a number of ways you can research a keyword to determine how competitive it is. Open a spreadsheet and list all your keywords down, then across you’re going to record the following for each keyword:

1. Search for your keyword phrase in Google. In the top right corner, Google will show you the number of competing pages for that keyword phrase. In the industrial industry, I suggest optimizing for keywords with less than 2.5 million results.

2. Search for the keyword phrase again, but this time put quotation marks around the word. You will get a lower number of competing pages this time. This will give you some insight into how many people are optimizing for your keyword. For the industrial industry, I suggest optimizing for keywords with less than 100,000 results.

3. Go to Google’s free keyword tool and search for your keyword. Google will display a green bar under “Advertiser Competition” column. When you put your cursor over the green bar, Google will tell you the keyword has “very low”, “low”, “average”, “high”, or “very high” advertiser competition. While these results are for paid advertising, they reflect the competition for organic results as well. I recommend optimizing for keywords with a grade of “high” or lower for the industrial market. Hint: If you only want to see the results for that keyword, click on “filter my results” then check “Don’t show ideas for new keywords. I only want to see data about the keywords I entered.”

Once you’re done, you’ll have a list of keywords that will have a great shot at page rankings with proper optimization. Put yourself in a position to succeed. Optimize for keywords that give you the best chance for top positions in the search engines!
