Building a Network

Filed under: General,Link Building — Julie Heltunen

So, I have been a part of some sales calls recently explaining the SEO techniques that we want to employ on some of our future clients’ websites.

A couple of the questions that always comes up is about the process of link building. What is the purpose and how is it done?

Link building seems to be a hot topic in the recent weeks, so I thought I would share my analogy. Link building is used to create authority for your website on the Internet. I compare it to building a network in person. The process is slow and strategic. As a person, you want to find the “right” connections and build a relationship with with these people or communities you become associated with. For example, you might build a network with the college you attended, then the recruiting agent you worked with to find your first job and then the company you worked for. So, as you go to start your own business you have a wide network of people and organizations to turn back to if you needed help or business.

Link building is the same way. You want to find different websites, blogs or other online media that relate to your website to begin a relationship. The process can be slow, but the better the links that are coming to your website the greater your network and emergency netting. If you needed to fall back on someone in person or online, you want it to be able to help you.

Tread carefully with link building, don’t just acquire links or pay for links that have no meaning to your website. Remember build that network and start an online relationship.

  • Thank you for a good explanation what link building is. It’s really helpful for new website owners. It would be nice to know how to build links too.
