Do the search engines really change often? Part II
My previous post discussed how Google’s supplemental results were becoming, in their words, “mainstream”. That’s more a big changes for Search Engine Optimizers or Marketers… this is because we used them often to understand what needs to be worked on.
So that day is passed and we move on to yet another “Change” topic. How often does Google’s index change?
When I first started working aggressively in this market, it was about once a month. As Matt Cutts posts today, when he started for Google in 2000, they could go every 3 months or so. I frequently tell my customers that Google changes almost every day and sometimes I think customers believe I’m trying to scare them into doing SEO on their sites! While that’s never a good tactic, it might be scary to some people!
What Matt posted today could be a bit scarier for some: Google re-indexes frequently EACH DAY!
Why could this be scary?
It’s scary for those who don’t believe in SEO. People who don’t believe in SEO tend to create a stagnant website that might initially get good visibility, then eventually falls lower and lower in the SERPs. (SERPs = search engine results pages).
Should it be scary?
No! This is a great situation for anyone who knows the fundamental premise of the search engines: they want reliable, original, and up-to-date information to serve up to the end user. If you know and hold it as your mantra, the search engines (read Google Gods) will appreciate your hard work and effort.
This is part of the reason why blogs perform so well in the search engines (To get tips on Blogs, read this great post). The last post on our blog - posted 3 days ago - is already indexed.
Be conscious of this with your own website. How up-to-date is your information? When is the last time you researched your keywords? When is the last time your site was indexed?
Just remember….Google’s watching all this!
