Designing for One Web | Mobile Internet Research #2

Filed under: Content & Copywriting,General,Usability & Conversions — Julie Heltunen

With the growth of the internet on mobile phones, it is imperative for designers, programmers and SEO specialist to understand the best way to please their website browsers. The differences between websites presented on a desktop computer or a cell phone should be minimal.

The sites will obviously look different. How do you squeeze everything from a 760 pixel wide site into a 120 pixel wide site? That would be hard, but the same information or important content of the site should be shared. A question to think about: what makes a visitor browse your website via a desktop computer in the first place? What information is being extracted? This information needs to be included in the mobile site.

There should be one web. It shouldn’t matter what web device a browser is using. The information should be similar on both types of sites and the bookmarks stored on the desktop should be same as the bookmarks on a mobile site.

Unity and consistency are two important concepts to keep in mind with a desktop and mobile site. There should be a united front between the two with a consistent look, feel, and portrayed atmosphere. If I am visiting a website at my computer and then again later on my cell phone, I want the same experience and information. Plan accordingly.
