Who cares about Canada? Quick Tip # 3 – The importance of local search.

During the various SEO discussions I have everyday, I frequently hear things like, “I really don’t care about Canada” and “I could care less if someone from California comes to my site”. Why would people say such things?  Because it’s too expensive to ship their products! They know they can be more competitive in a specific geographic area.

Quick Tip: Make sure you are optimizing your site for regional search terms.

Here in Minneapolis, there are various regional additions to search terms – Twin Cities, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then there are the local suburbs around Minneapolis.  Keyword research plays an incredibly crucial role at this point.  It will be time consuming, but worth it.  People DO search regionally, you just have to find out what those terms are. We have keyword research tools listed in our Free SEO Tools section.

Incorporating this into your site should be fairly easy.  Most sites should contain geographic information in the footer of the website.  Additionally, the content on the product or services should contain some geographic or regional information.  For instance, “We provide precision CNC machining services to the Minneapolis, Minnesota area…”  Including this type of information should be very natural and not forced.  But many companies forget who their target audience really is.

So if you care about Canada – carry on!  If not, be sure to note who you DO care about in your website.
