Industrial Search Engines: Traffic and Page View Comparisons

I’ve been posting a lot about the different Industrial Search Engines; otherwise referred to as Vertical Directories, because many of my clients (as well as the company I work for) advertise in the directories. Every directory has their niche’, right? Something that sets them apart from the others. It could be traffic, reputation, pricing – any number of things. And I think each directory can provide some value to it’s customers – otherwise they wouldn’t be around, would they?

Today I wanted to take just a couple minutes to show the Alexa traffic and page views for 5 directores: GlobalSpec, MacRae’s, ThomasNet, Industrial Quick Search, and KellySearch. Both graphs are for the last 6 months. I should clarify: Alexa is dependent on people having their toolbar installed – this is where they get all their data from. So these figures are not comprehensive; rather, I use them as pattern indicators.

I was pretty surprised that while traffic stayed pretty consistent, the average page views dropped across the board.

  1. ThomasNet
  2. GlobalSpec

It seems that IQS is lagging behind… what are some things they can do to improve traffic? Thoughts anyone?

  • Ruby, I’d take a look at iqsdirectory.com

Here is the Alexa chart comparing them to globalspec and thomasnet. Its more neck-in-neck than even I thought it would be.

How people navigate the sites will also affect the number of page views. In any case, I’m surprised to see Thomas beating Globalspec.

  • Dave, you’re right: iqsdirectory.com definitely shows some better stats…

There was one point at the end of March where GlobalSpec has a higher rank…just barely squeaked ahead.

  • I will say that globalspec isnt really best used as a trafficking tool. its used for overall exposure, branding and lead generation most effectively. while thomasnet is most usefull as a trafficking tool. thomasnet will build a category for your company, where globalspec has preset categories that your company must fit into. this makes for better leads from having a better registered userbase
