Linking Methods
Incoming links (or “backlinks”) is a term that references the number of links pointing to your site from other sources on the web. This is becoming increasingly important when it comes to search engine algorithms.
For example, if a user types in a key phrase for which a search engine identifies several equally relevant sites content wise, what usually happens is that the site who has more incoming links will appear higher on the search engine results pages(SERPS.)
If you think about it, it makes sense. Because the goal of the search engines is to return the most relevant results possible to a searcher’s query, a site with tons of incoming links must be more relevant, by search engine logic. This is true especially for Google.
So then, the course of action is to get as many backlinks to your site as possible. This can be done in a number of ways:
1. Ask those in your industry with whom you have ongoing business relationships to link you from their site. (It looks much better to the search engines to have a link from a relevant site than a site entirely unrelated to your keyphrases.)
2. Obtain backlinks on your own by posting comments at industry-related forums, making sure to include your site’s URL. Also remeber to consult the forum’s anti-spam policy to make sure you dont get eighty-sixed.
3. Include your site in free/paid directories. There are several industrial directories out there on the web, and we’ve included a list for you at our Industrial Resource Directory page.
4. Write and submit articles. Try your own Google search using the terms “free articles online” and see what resources are available to you. Many sites have industrial related categories for which you can include articles relevant to a specific niche topic. It’s crucial that your article be informative in nature and not a thinly veiled advertisement. Include a URL in your article.
THINGS TO REMEMBER…
1. Use anchor text
2. Exercise consistency when it comes to your URL formatting
3. Reciprocal Linking is out. Suggest alternate methods of reciprocity when you a recieve a “link back to me” request from those linking to you.
